Writing a Haiku

This week we worked in groups to create a Haiku. A Haiku is a short form poetry originally from Japan. It is made up of 3 lines, totalling 17 syllables. The first line is 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables and the third line is 5 syllables.

Firstly we did a quick recap as a class about syllables. We did this by going through each person’s name and seeing how many syllables there were for everyone.

Next we worked on what things are green- connected to our green zones.

Then we tried a Haiku together.

Finally the children created their own Haikus in their group and with a teensy bit of tweaking they were just amazing. I was blown away at their first attempts.
